The series chronicles the daily life of Katie Otto, an average wife and
mother who tries to stand out among the more wealthy, arrogant
housewives and their privileged children in her hometown of Westport, Connecticut.
She lives with Greg, her level-headed husband and a university
professor, and their three children. Taylor is their athletic oldest
daughter who wants to fit in with her peers; Oliver, their savvy and
snarky son, is the middle child; and Anna-Kat, sweet but
obsessive-compulsive, is the youngest and Katie's blatant favorite.
During the blind auditions, the decisions from the musician coaches are
based solely on voice and not on looks. The coaches hear the artists
perform, but they don't get to see them - thanks to rotating chairs. If a
coach is impressed by the artist's voice, he/she pushes a button to
select the artist for his/her team. At this point, the coach's chair
will swivel so that he/she can face the artist he/she has selected. If
more than one coach pushes his/her button, the power then shifts to the
artists to choose which coach they want to work with. If no coach pushes
his/her button, the artist is eliminated from the competition.

The series begins with an eerie narration by John Rayburn: "Sometimes
you know something’s coming. You can feel it. In the air. In your gut.
And you don’t sleep at night. The voice in your head is telling you that
something is going to go terribly wrong and there’s nothing you can do
to stop it. That’s how I felt when my brother came home."
