DIY fajita seasoning

As said before, I'm all about making things myself if I can. I decided to make fajitas this week so I knew I wanted to make my own seasoning versus buying the sodium filled packets. Found a recipe and made it. It's full of so much more flavor! Here's the recipe. I guarantee you already have these spices!

3 Tbsp. cornstarch
2 Tbsp. chili powder
1 Tbsp. salt
1 Tbsp. paprika
1 Tbsp. sugar
2-1/2 tsp. crushed chicken bouillon cube
1-1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp. cumin

Mix it all together and put in a container. 1/4 cup of spices is the same as 1 packet you buy. Add more or less

Cream of "whatever" soup

As I said here and here, I really like making home made things. You never know what's in those cans, packages and bottles, except a ton of sodium. Making your own, you know what's in it and you make more for less money. I stumbled across a recipe for "Cream of whatever soup" and thought I'd give it a shot. A ton of recipes I use call for a can or two. All of the ingredients I keep in the pantry  except the dried milk, which cost about $8 for the bag.

1 cup non-fat dried milk
3/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup boullion ( I used chicken)
1 tspn dried basil
1 tspn dried thyme
1 tspn pepper

Mix it all together and I put it in 2 containers. Yet another reason why I don't throw any good container with lid away.. I made a label that says "Cream of Soup - 1 can = 1 1/3 cup mix + 1 1/4 cup water"
I've already used 2 "cans" of the mix and it worked really well and tasted really good.

Home made taco seasoning

While making my grocery list and printing recipes from my Pinterest board, I remembered I had pinned a homemade taco seasoning recipe. Sure, those packets you get in the store are super cheap at .50-$2.00 but you can make 5x the same stuff for the price, plus who knows what's in those little packages, not to mention they are loaded with sodium(something we have tried to cut back on in our house)... I keep hearing the phrase "If you make it, you know what's in it!" so I decided to make my own.

First off, I store all of my spices in these little glass containers I bought from Bed Bath & Beyond. When I need a spice, I don't like having to look through all the spices in my pantry to find what I need. I just write what it is on the top of the container(mine have a white top, not black) and keep them in ABC order on the shelf. Why don't spice companies labels the tops of their spices, instead of the front?

Homemade Taco Seasoning

Ingredients

  • 1 part chili powder
  • 1 part ground cumin
  • 1 part garlic powder
  • 1 part onion powder
  • 1/4 – 1/2 part crushed red pepper

(I did include red peppers, just didn't get the container in the pic)

I just labeled one of my containers "Taco Seasoning" and put it in front of Thyme :) I then made a label to put on front that says 3 Tbspn = 1 packet so I know how much to use when I have a recipe that calls for 1 packet of seasoning. 3 Tablespoons may be a little heavy so you may want to use 2.

Now I can't wait to make something with it this next week!
